Mulconry's Irish Pub (17 Lift Bridge Lane, Fairport) opened a few weeks ago to add another Irish offering to the village of Fairport.

The image of the weathered Irishman on the menu instantly makes you want to grab a pint and hear his story.

The atmosphere is similarly conducive, the restaurant is warmly decorated, features high ceilings, and comes complete with a relaxing stone fireplace.

This could easily become a home away from home, especially with friendly, hands-on owner like Damian Mulconry working the floor. During our visit he was visiting tables and sharing stories with many customers.

The vast menu covers pub fare, along with a section of the menu dedicated to Irish specialties. While the menu is slightly heavy on American favorites, I was ecstatic to see boxties (or, more commonly, boxtys) on the menu.

Boxties are essentially the Irish version of fried potato cakes; at Mulconry's they are folded like an omelet with other ingredients tucked inside. And that all translates into golden goodness.

The toughest part at Mulconry's was choosing which boxtie to try, as there were three on the menu, along with the boxtie special (that particular night it was BBQ chicken) that our server presented. I settled on the chicken and asparagus variety.

The presentation was simple, which suited the dish. Instead of being deeply fried, this version was almost crepe-like, although thicker and meatier in texture, with a subtle lemon sauce highlighting the fresh asparagus and tender chicken.

We also tried the fish & chips, made with cod. The fish was warm
and flaky; the batter hot and crispy.

The menu is large enough to encourage repeat visits.
